Get Prepared Before You Ride

Posted on: January 2, 2013

(ORILLIA, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) are reminding riders that a snowmobile can quickly take you away from areas where services, communities and emergency assistance are easily accessible or available. Responsible snowmobilers take charge of their own safety and well-being by preparing their sled, gear and equipment before the first ride of the season. In addition to getting properly trained and knowing the law, there are other factors to consider when getting ready for safe snowmobiling...

Know the Law and Get Trained Before You Ride

Posted on: December 19, 2012

(ORILLIA, ON) – The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) remind snowmobilers that their safety, peace of mind and enjoyment while sledding this winter start with being compliant with the Motorized Snow Vehicles Act (MSVA) and being properly trained.

Many of the rules governing motor vehicle drivers apply to snowmobile operators, such as speeding, failing to stop at a road crossing and driving with a Blood Alcohol Level (BAC) that exceeds the legal limit. Failure to comply with the law carries penalties including fines, loss of driver’s licence, criminal charges and/or imprisonment.

Ottawa Valley Upgrades Trails

Posted on: November 20, 2012

With the good news received recently, snowmobilers should think seriously about including a trip to the Ottawa Valley in their snowmobiling plans for this winter. Ontario snowmobiling in that region takes a big step forward this winter thanks to a $230,000 tourism development investment in improvements for many of the trails you may ride.

The Reason to Buy Your Permit Early

Posted on: November 15, 2012

The operation of Ontario snowmobile trails is solely funded by snowmobilers buying permits. Ontario snowmobiling does not benefit from any dollars from fuel taxes, sled registrations or other government largesse for regular snowmobile trail operations. So OFSC snowmobile clubs must rely on snowmobilers buying enough permits — and purchasing them early enough — to pay the considerable start up costs for trails and equipment each fall.

Sharing the Rising Cost of Trails (OFSC Insight)

Posted on: September 14, 2009

By now, most snowmobilers have accepted the user pay system. This is where each individual rider pays a small share of the total cost of providing snowmobile trails to ride. Each small share is partly reflected in the fee for a Snowmobile Trail Permit (I say partly, because in fact, the fee does not cover the full annual cost, as you will see.) The basic idea is that since every sled entering OFSC trails contributes some damage to the trail surface, every sled should have a permit to help defray the expense of making that surface smooth again...
